Wow, a meme...

So, a couple of non-LJ/blogger friends threw this meme at me, so to speak, and I'm finally getting around to posting answers to some of the questions I liked more. Ok, explanation first:

· Leave me a comment saying "Resistance is Futile."
· I'll respond by asking you five questions so I can satisfy my curiosity
· Update your journal with the answers to the questions
· Include this explanation in the post and offer to ask other people questions

Select questions:

1) Make a list of ten movies you really enjoyed. Can you sense any pattern to them?

Hmm. This is hard. Let's see if I can think of my ten favorites.
  • Pirates of the Caribbean -- Jack Sparrow/Johnny Depp = KICK-ASS. It was just a great movie overall -- fun, funny, quirky, action-packed, swash-buckling... and my first ever Johnny Depp movie
  • Iron Man -- Tony Stark/Robert Downey Jr. = KICK-ASS. Lol. I've never been much of a comic book person, but my friend really wanted to watch this movie, and I'm so glad I caved, because it was amazing. Not just the amazing computer graphics, but the humor, the cast.. =D And my first ever Robert Downey Jr. movie!
  • Ocean's Eleven -- First off, George Clooney + Brad Pitt = what's not to love? The supporting cast was great together, and the movie overall was slick and clever. I love a good crime caper =)
  • Casino Royale -- Finally, a solid James Bond movie! ..after a way-too-long dry spell. Daniel Craig >>> Pierce Brosnan. Plus he's *built.* It was a fun 'origins'-type movie, and I kind of liked that it brought out the nitty-gritty Bond sans all the techno gadgets. Bare-knuckled, if you will.
  • The Prestige -- Sometimes confusing, but oh-so-good. Full of darkness and intrigue and different shades of entertainment. Hugh Jackman and Christian Bale with a side of Anthony Hopkins put together a creative piece here.
  • Monty Python and the Holy Grail -- Really, what's *not* to love? SO funny. My side was hurting wayy before the movie ended.
  • Good Will Hunting -- Matt Damon and Robin Williams played off of each other *so* well. Interesting foray into the human psyche, among other things.
  • Memento -- Crazy thriller! I've never seen any other Guy Pearce movie, but this one was craaaaazyyyy [good]. Action, mental messiness, insanity, etc. (Ok, I'm starting to sense a pattern =P)
  • Inside Man -- Hey, look, it's another crime caper! A rather intelligent one, like Ocean's Eleven but rougher around the edges in a good way. Like Clive Owen's scruff.
  • The Departed -- GAH so good! Poor Leonardo DiCaprio. And Matt Damon kicking butt again (I loved his Bourne movies, too, but I had a limit of 10.. *sigh* =P). Jack Nicholson being crazy. Cool cast, fun music, back-stabbing, messy plotlines, shooting, undercover work. Just, wow.
I started out trying desperately to expand my list of 2 to a list of 10... and ended up with a list of 30+. I didn't have the heart to leave all my other almost-favorites unmentioned, so they're at the bottom. *halo* =D As for a pattern -- I definitely love action movies that also have an interesting/clever/quirky plot. And humor! It can be punny or wicked -- I'm down with both. Intrigue. Fun.

2) If you could forbid the use of any random word, phrase or quote - would you do it? And if so, what would it be?

Yes -- I'd forbid the use of "motherf***er." That's one word that just deep-down, to-the-guts bothers me. I'm sure there are a couple others, but it's the only one I can think of.

3) If Hobbes got lost in any other fictional universe, who do you think could take good care of him?

Hmm. Assuming you're talking about the stuffed tiger Hobbes, I would say Tony Stark from Iron Man would take really good care of him. I mean, he already talks to his robots; talking to a stuffed tiger isn't a *huge* stretch. Plus, he's like a grown-up version of Calvin; I imagine they'd get along fabulously =D

4) Describe the protagonist of any novel you've read. Do you like them?

Ooh! So I spent a huuuge part of last week re-reading the Ender's Shadow quartet. For anyone unfamiliar -- Ender's Shadow is a parallel novel to Ender's Game, which is an amazing sci-fi novel by Orson Scott Card that everyone should read. Ender's Shadow follows a minor character from Ender's Game, Bean, who is the product of a slight (engineered) genetic mutation which means his brain is much more powerful than even the smartest human. He was an early bloomer in everything, but tiny at the outset, though his mutation means he'll grow much more rapidly than the average person and die by his mid-20s -- it's what makes him so smart, and yet is his curse. He believes everything he does is motivated by his survival instincts, but human emotions creep up on him when he least expects them to. Basically, in Ender's Shadow, he's Ender's right-hand man without ever making it obvious, always supporting him and helping him along as they try to save the Earth from the invading Formics. In the three following books, he returns to Earth and helps Ender's brother try to tame the international post-war ruckus. Bean is one of the smartest, coolest, most intellectual protagonists I've ever read about, and one of my favorites.

Wow.. what a long ramble. Sorry about that!

5) If you could travel anywhere in the world, what one place you pick. Yes, I said ONE!

Ok, we all know what happens if I start thinking too hard about these questions (it'll take another week...), so off the top of my head: Malaysia. I've heard it's beautiful, and of course I've never been there before. And I was trying to think of a place more exotic than Europe =D

6) If you could have lunch with anyone, dead or alive who would it be and why?

This question is always hard for me to answer. There are so many people I would want to talk to. I try to go for someone who's not around anymore, though, so... hm. I would pick John Wilkes Booth. He was essentially the Brad Pitt of the 1800s, and then he goes and assassinates Lincoln -- wth? That'd make for an interesting conversation, I think. Or maybe Kennedy's assassin -- we're not 100% sure who that is, if you believe the conspiracy theorists. Or Alexander the Great. So many interesting choices!

7) Describe your perfect day.

Right now, all I want is sleep =P But in the spirit of trying to give a more complete answer... my perfect day would have 48 hours in which I could spend time with my mom and little sister, have a get-together w/ all my cousins, hang out with some of my HS friends that are now scattered across the country (and also the ones that aren't), play ultimate frisbee with some of my friends, play a game of pick-up basketball (I haven't done this in AGES, and I suck, but it's so much fun) and/or capture the flag, go out to watch a movie, read a book, visit Great Falls in Virginia... ok, I'm out for now.

8) I have time to see one thing in DC, what would you show me?

Since you gave a rather loose time limit, I'll assume you have a couple of hours. So, unless it was raining, I'd take you for a leisurely walk from the Washington Monument [grounds] to the Lincoln Memorial, cross the National Mall (you get to see a bunch of museums and cool statues from outside/a distance, and the US Capitol building), and end up on the balcony of the Kennedy Center at dusk, along the Potomac River. Not bad, right? And pretty scenic, too ;)

Extra movies (super-rough order of preference):

I've read the first two books of the Bean quartet. I guess you'd recommend that I finish it? I want to know more about Bean, but I feel like I hear enough about war on Earth in reality.

And... Resistance is Futile.
